Estimating Materials
|

 |
1. Stone Flats
|
|
To
estimate the amount of flats that you will need if you are measuring to the
nearest foot, multiply the length in feet by the height in feet and that
will give you the square footage. If you are measuring to the nearest inch,
multiply the length in inches by the height in inches and divide by 144.
This will also give you the square footage. Rogue River Stone is sold by the
square foot to the nearest box. |
|
|
2. Stone Corners
|
Measure
the lineal foot of each corner you would like to go around. Corners are sold
by the lineal footage to the nearest box. You may take a deduction on your
flat square footage for the corners you will use. Because each foot of
corners will cover Ύ of one square foot of flat area, you can deduct 75% of
you corner footage off the amount of flats you will use. For example, if you
had 50 lineal feet of corners you would deduct 37.5 (50 x.75) square feet
from the amount of flats before you place your order. |
|
|
3. Metal Lath
|
|
Most metal lath that is sold for veneer stone is approximately 28x 96 and
covers about 18 square feet. This will give you an idea of how many sheets
you will need. |
|
|
4. Mortar
|
There are two different types of mortar that we recommend for installation,
type S and type N. The type S is more for commercial applications; it
will cure faster than type N which is good for cooler weather. Type N has a
longer curing time, and is stickier than type S, which will make
installation easier for the novice. It also doesnt set up as fast in warmer
weather, which allows more time for working the joints and grouting. Most
dealers sell these in 80-lb premixed bags so all you need to do is add
water. An 80-lb bag will cover approximently 15 square feet. This includes
scratch coat, laying the stone and grouting the stone. Many masons use type
S in cooler weather and type N in warmer weather. |

5.Grout bags
|
Dont forget to ask for grout bags if you are laying stone that needs to be
grouted. Some dealers sell a throwaway bag that is good for about 150 square
feet, but can be reused if taken good care of. If you are using a throwaway
bag, make sure that you get a bag for everyone that will be grouting, plus
at least one extra for every three installers in case one develops a tear,
which is not uncommon. |
