Questions and Answers

Q. How is it made?

A. Rogue River Stone is made with Portland cement, Lightweight aggregates and sand. We add color to the mix and to the molds that we have created from natural stone.

Q. How much does it weigh?

A. Rogue River Stone weighs between 10 & 14 lbs per square foot.

Q. How much does it cost?

A. The cost of Rogue River Stone is 1/3 to ½ the cost of natural stone. Check with your local dealer to get an exact square footage cost. If you do not know who your local dealer is please contact us at 541-476-4448 or visit us on the web at http://www.rogueriverstone.com.

Q. How long will it last?

A. We have a fifty-year warranty, but with the aging test that we have ran it should last years beyond that.

Q. Is it good for inside or outside?

A. It is good for both inside or outside applications.

Q. Do you need to seal it?

A. It is not necessary to seal the stone, but it should be done in areas where it may be rained on or sprayed on by sprinklers a lot. The sealer needs to be one that is approved by the manufacture such as a breathable sealer.

Q. Is it safe for fireplaces?

A. Yes, it is safe for fireplaces, except for the inside of the firebox itself, only approved firebrick should be placed inside of a firebox. Like any other concrete product it will crack when exposed to extreme heat.

Q. How is it installed?

A. If you are installing over wood, nail or staple up a vapor barrier, next nail or staple up the wire lath, scratch coat the lath with mortar, using no more than a workable area (5 to 10 sq. ft.), so that the mortar will not set up before the stone is applied, using type “N” or a type “S” mortar. Apply mortar to the back of the stone, place stone on the wall pushing it firmly and moving it side to side to ensure a good bond. If you are not dry stacking (leaving no joint between stone) then you will need to fill-in or grout the joints. Put mortar in a grout bag (looks like a big cake decorating bag, available at your local dealer) and squeeze mortar between the stones. Let that stand until it is firm enough to work, rake out the extra mortar, smooth joints and then sweep clean. If you are going over brick, block, or concrete there is no need for the vapor barrier, wire lath or the scratch coat. Make sure you keep your stone as clean as possible not letting any mortar get on the front of your stone.

Q. How is it sold?

A. It is sold by the square foot for the flats and lineal foot for the corners. The stone comes in a handy pack box with anywhere from 9- sq. ft. to 11.5 sq. ft. depending on the stone you choose.

Q. How do you measure the Job?

A. Multiply the length by the height in inches then divide by 144. This will give you the square feet. Measure how high the corners are and this will give you the lineal footage you need.

Q. Can you back fill against it?

A. It is better if you do not back fill against it, because it can stain from the dirt or cause wicking.

Q. Can it be installed over cement board?

A. Yes, but it is not as strong of a bond.

Q. Can it be cut?

A. Yes it can be cut very easily because of the pumice in it. But when you cut you will not have the same look on the sides as you had prior to cutting. So do your best to hide the cuts. A rule of thumb to follow when cutting, place the cut side up above eye level, and place the stone down when below eye level. You can also obtain a paint repair kit from your dealer if needed.

Q. What is the maintenance?

A. Rogue River Stone is maintenance free except for cleaning if it gets dirty. Do not use heavy cleaning chemicals like Muriatic Acid, it will fade the colors and could cause streaking. Use a warm soapy solution and a good stiff nylon brush, no wire brushes. You can also use a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water.

Q. Can you color the mortar?

A. Yes, you can color the mortar almost any color you would like. See your local dealer for proper types of color. Also be careful not to get the color on the stones.

Q. Can it be used in swimming pools or fountains?

A. It can be used around swimming pools or fountains, but not in them. The chlorine on the stone continuously can make the color fade.
